Electromagnetic induction is the
creation of electrical voltage:
Electromagnetic induction is the creation of electrical voltage over a
conductor
positioned in a changing magnetic flux.
In 1831, Michael Faraday discovered the phenomenon of induction. He
established
that electromotive force (EMF) produced over a closed path is
proportional to the
change of the magnetic flux through any surface restricted by that path.
Put into
simple terms for those of us who flunked physics, this means when the
magnetic flux
through a surface bounded by the conductor changes an electrical current
can be
carried through the closed conductor. This will apply if the field
changes in strength
or if the conductor is moved through the field. Any electrical machine,
including
generators, transformers and induction motors, electromagnetic induction
is the
reason they operate.
